Professional
quality Hand Made Dilruba
Dilruba is string instrument very similar to
Esraj. The
instrument has a medium sized sitar-like neck with 20 heavy metal frets. Dilruba
has four main strings which are bowed. All of the strings are metal. The
soundboard is a stretched piece of goatskin similar to one found on a sarangi.
Sometimes the instrument has a gourd affixed to the top for balance.
The Dilruba is
held vertically while sitting in a squating position with the lower portion
placed on the lap of the performer or in front of the lap, touching the ground.
The top rests against the left shoulder. It
is played with a bow, using the other hand to press the strings between the
frets. The player may slide the note up or down to achieve the portamento, or
sustained vibrations, characteristic of Indian music.
This instrument is very effective as an accompaniment to vocal music, as an
instrument for solo performance or as a composing tool. Simple melodies and the
subtlest nuances can be produced with ease.
